A Beginner’s Guide to Drone Rules in New Zealand
If you fly a drone in New Zealand, even just for fun, you’re flying under Civil Aviation Rule Part 101 and you’re legally responsible for every flight. There’s no licence to buy and no registration to complete, but the rules apply from the moment the props start turning.
Our free guide is a plain-English introduction to the basics. It’s a good place to start if you’re new to drones.
Inside the guide:
- an overview of the core Part 101 rules
- when to use HAAST to check airspace
- an introduction to flying within 4 km of an aerodrome
- step-by-step flowcharts to help plan your flight
- when you might need permission, a pilot qualification or Part 102 certification
- DOC land, council parks, privacy and wildlife
- a pre-flight checklist and a jargon buster

This guide is just the beginning
It doesn’t cover everything you need to know to fly safely and legally in every situation. Airspace, aerodromes, night flying and hazard management all take proper training to get right.
If you want to really understand the rules, our UAS Remote Pilot Certificate covers it all in depth. It also gives you the qualification you need to fly within 4 km of an aerodrome. We’ve been training drone pilots for over 15 years as a CAA Part 141 certificated training organisation.
